Leadership is often characterized by responsibility, decision-making, and strategy, but somewhere along the way, the concept of fun can be overshadowed by the weight of duty. Yet, at its core, leadership isn’t just about guiding a team to achieve goals—it’s about fostering a culture where creativity, collaboration, and joy can flourish. Through my participation in GWALA, I was reminded by Dean Lach from the School of Engineering and Applied Science that, at the end of the day, leadership should focus on finding joy because our work is “supposed to be fun!”
GWALA was a wonderfully fulfilling experience where I was able to move beyond my existing networks at GW to learn about the amazing revolutionaries we have here at GW. I was constantly inspired by the guest speakers who shared their wisdom and their leadership journey with us. My cohort inspired me to continue to build change through building relationships and my capacity as a leader.
GWALA provided me with actionable skills and knowledge about leadership and our amazing support here at GW. But it also reminded me of my why. It reminded me why I love academia and why I love working with teams- because I find joy and draw energy from working and growing with people. Dean Lach’s presentation catalyzed it all for me and got me thinking about how we can remind ourselves as leaders to find fun and joy. When leaders embrace fun as an integral part of their role, they unlock a powerful tool for motivation and connection. I learned many lessons through GWALA about finding joy in leadership and building culture.
- Create Space for Authenticity
Authenticity breeds trust, and trust fuels engagement. Leaders who allow their personality and sense of humor to shine cultivate an environment where others feel comfortable being themselves. Showing up as your genuine self fosters camaraderie and respect. - Celebrate Small Wins
Leadership isn’t just about reaching the big milestones—it’s about recognizing the steps along the way. Celebrating small victories boosts morale and reminds everyone that progress is worth acknowledging. A shoutout in a meeting, a creative reward system, or even an impromptu celebration can inject joy into the journey. - Encourage Playfulness and Creativity
Leaders set the tone for how their team approaches challenges. By encouraging playful problem-solving and creative brainstorming, leaders signal that exploring unconventional ideas and taking calculated risks is okay. Infusing activities with a sense of fun can transform stress into excitement, leading to innovative solutions. - Model Resilience and Optimism
Challenges are inevitable, but how leaders respond makes all the difference. Maintaining a sense of humor and optimism during difficult times demonstrates resilience and reassures the team that setbacks are opportunities for growth, not defeat. - Connect on a Human Level
Leadership is ultimately about people. By focusing on meaningful connections—sharing laughs, stories, and experiences—you utilize emotional intelligence and remind your team that they’re valued as individuals, not just contributors to a mission. These moments of joy build lasting bonds and enhance collaboration. - The Ripple Effect of Joyful Leadership
When leaders prioritize joy, they don’t just lift their spirits—they energize their teams and influence the broader culture of their organization. Fun is a powerful force for engagement, creativity, and trust. After all, leadership isn’t supposed to be all seriousness—it’s supposed to be inspiring, empowering, and, yes, fun.
I am so thankful for the leadership of GWALA, Provost Bracey and all his support, my cohort, and all of our guest speakers who helped me on my leadership journey. I feel so fortunate to be a member of the GWALA community and part of this GW family. GWALA has taught me so much about leadership and this amazing university I am so fortunate to be a part of. Thank you for the lessons and the inspiration for cohort 5 of GWALA! As I continue my leadership journey, I will do so with the reminder that as a leader, I will strive to embrace the lighter moments, celebrate the journey, and find joy in every step of the adventure because this work is “supposed to be fun!”
